One of the problems users are noticing in Windows 10 is that they’re unable to delete some files or folders. And if you’re facing the same issue, we’ll show you a few solutions to this problem.

We frequently remove files from our PCs, but sometimes you cannot delete a folder, file, or icon in Windows 10.

This can be an annoying problem, and speaking of file removal, many Windows 10 users reported the following issues:

How can I delete files, folders or icons on Windows 10?

1. Reboot your system

Can not delete output file что делать windows 10

Sometimes, all you need to do is to restart your machine and the problem will be gone.

Unresponsiveness doesn’t just happen in this case, for example, a lot of people reported that they’re unable to open the start menu sometimes, but when they restart their computer, everything works fine.

But if restarting your PC didn’t solve the problem, you can try one of the following solutions.

2. Use a dedicated third-party cleaner

IObit Uninstaller

3. Delete the file/folder using Command Prompt

4. Check your antivirus

Antivirus software is a necessity, and many antivirus tools have a useful feature that can protect your files. Thanks to this feature, malicious applications and users won’t be able to delete your files.

Even though this feature is useful, it can also prevent you from removing certain files.

To fix this problem, you need to check your antivirus settings and see if this feature is enabled. If so, disable it for the files that you want to delete and check if that solves the issue.

If you can’t find this feature, you can remove your antivirus and check if that helps.

If removing the antivirus solves the problem, you should consider switching to a different antivirus solution. There are many great tools available, but you should always choose the best.

5. Change the Ownership of the file/folder

Can’t delete file, ‘could not find this file’ please help

I have a file, with no file extension, it says the file type is a file, that’s it, of 23.6kb

It was a subtitle file for a foreign film which I guess didn’t download properly.

I try to delete it but get the message:

Could not find this item

This is no longer located in c:\ blah blah blah

Verify the item’s location and try again.

It is in a folder in my downloads, I can move it to any folder on the c drive but not to an external drive, because my computer can’t find it to move it from c!

I have tried safe mode, no luck there, it is still unable to find the file.

It is not locked, it is not in use by another program, it is just there, and it won’t go.

I appreciate any help on this one, it is making my immaculate file system rather untidy.

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community.

I understand your concern and frustration you have been through. I will be glad to assist you.

If you’re trying to delete a file and your computer isn’t letting you, it’s most likely because another program is currently trying to use the file. This can occur even if you don’t see any programs running. Deleting these files is usually a matter of forcing the program that’s using the file to close.

1. Close any open programs and try deleting the file again.

2. Press the Windows key + R and type cmd to open the Command Prompt.

3. Type cd C:\path\to\file and press Enter. Replace C: with the actual drive letter and path\to\file with the address of the folder.

5. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open the Task Manager.

8.Delete the containing folder if you still can’t delete the file. Sometimes, deleting the folder will allow you to delete the file that it contains. Keep in mind that deleting a folder will delete all of its contents. Type rmdir /s directoryName and press Enter.

9. Try booting into Safe Mode if you can’t delete the file

10. Try deleting using the file’s short name. Sometimes odd characters can cause problems with deleting the file. Using the file’s «short name», or DOS-compatible name, may help. •Navigate to the file’s directory and type dir /x.
•Note the short name of the file (i.e FILENA

1.XYZ).
•Type del FILENA

1.XYZ and press Enter.

Hope this information is helpful. Please do let us know if you need further assistance, we’ll be glad to assist you.

Thanks for your reply, I appreciate that you are trying to help me.

Please read my original post:

File HAS NO EXTENSION name

Deleting from Safe Mode DID NOT WORK

The file is NOT BEING USED by another program

In cmd mode the file ‘is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file’.

The problem file is in a folder, it is the only file in that folder. I cannot move it out of that folder because it cannot be found.

Any other suggestions, anyone?

Thanks again Pavan N!

Windows 10: Can´t Delete Folder or File – Here Is the Fix

Windows 10 sometimes refuses to delete a specific folder or file. Learn why and how you can force delete a file or folder in Windows 10.

Can not delete output file что делать windows 10

Windows 10 sometimes refuses to delete certain folders or file. We’ll show you how to take action in such a case and still erase the affected files from your hard drive.

If Windows 10 refuses to delete a folder or file, this might be caused by two reasons.

Either the affected files/folders are currently being used by Windows 10 or a running software – or you don´t have the rquired permissions to delete the folder/file.

This might be quite annoying if you definitely don’t need the affected files/folders anymore, like in the case of files that had been used or created by an already uninstalled or removed software.

In some cases such files remain “marked” as open / “in-use” or you simply do not have the user-rights to delete them. With the following 3 methods you can still get rid of such files or folders.

Method 1: Delete file/folder as administrator

The most common reason why you cannot delete a file is lack of user rights on the system. If your user account does not have administrator rights, you will need to log in with an appropriate admin account. If someone else is managing your system as an administrator, you will need to contact them.

Method 2: Change file/folder ownership

Some files/folders cannot be deleted by you as a user because another user is marked as owner. As administrator you can set yourself as the owner which is called “taking ownership” in IT-lingo.

To do this, start by right-clicking on the file or folder and selecting “Properties”.

Can not delete output file что делать windows 10

In the properties dialog that appears, switch to the “Security”-tab and click on “Advanced”. Can not delete output file что делать windows 10

The owner of the file is shown at the top. If you have administrator rights, you can click on “Change” on the right and set yourself as the owner.

Can not delete output file что делать windows 10

A dialog box will pops up. There, just enter your user name in the white box. If you have a Microsoft account connected to Windows 10, this is the corresponding email address, otherwise just your normal user-name. Click on “OK” to apply the new setting.

Can not delete output file что делать windows 10

In the main window you can now see your account as “the owner of the file”. To make the change permanent, you have to close this window as well by clicking “OK” or “Apply”. If you still can’t delete the file or folder, the last method below will help you.

Method 3: Delete file/folder with Lockhunter

First you install the freeware Lockhunter, which you can download here. Then click on the file or folder you want to delete and select “What is locking this file?” from the context menu.

Can not delete output file что делать windows 10

In the Lockhunter that opens you can see a list of the processes that are responsible for the deletion lock. With a click on “Unlock Selected Process” you can separate them from the file and delete them afterwards. The big button “Delete It!” does both tasks at once if you wish and removes the file or folder directly from the hard disk.
